Draft Logo Project

Idea and Inspiration

For this project I wanted to create a logo for my blog. I wanted this logo to represent what my blog is about and also be simple, yet unique. The way I decided to do this is by having my logo be a dress form. Dress forms are used in every part of the fashion world from design studios to retail stores and everything in between, so I thought it would be a good way to make my topic obvious to viewers.

Design Process

I didn’t really do any research to help develop my idea because I pretty much knew what I wanted to do from the get-go. The significance of the capital letter Q in the center of the dress form represents the first letter of my first name. The dress form itself is significant to me because in my first retail job that really developed my interest in the fashion world, I would work with them everyday either dressing them or setting up displays. My design process consisted mostly of looking and hundreds of different dress forms to find one that had the shape I wanted. It also included picking out the font I wanted to use.

Technical Detail

I found the image I used as a reference when tracing the dress form on Google Images after I typed in dress form and scrolled for about 5 minutes. I traced the image in illustrator with the pen tool on the right side. Then I copied and pasted the right side and used the reflect tool to make the two sides be able to match up. I then joined these two paths together to create one shape. After that, I changed the fill to a light pink color and the stroke to none. I then went and looked at the fonts for a while and tried out a bunch of different ones before settling on Source Serif Variable. Finally, I selected both the text and shape and rasterized them.

Final Graphic Design Project

For my Graphic Design Project I have decided to create a magazine cover! My magazine cover has images describing what my blog is about and various images I have collected from my projects as a Fashion Merchandising Student. This project idea relates to my topic because it allows me to explain the three main things I am passionate about in my major and my potential career path, styling, designing, and graphic design. The way I created my project also made it easier for me to illustrate how these three main parts of my passion come into my life with the different photos I used.

The design influences that inspired me came from mostly the tutorial on the bulletin board with the different buildings at WSU and also from my color palette that I created when I designed my collection last spring in my AMDT 268 class. Research that I did to form my idea was just perusing magazine covers online and seeing what they consisted of. The significance of the background of my design is the main place that gives me inspiration, the beach back home in San Diego. The other elements of my design have significance because they are all projects that I put my entire heart into.

My design process started out by using the pen tool to cut out the image of myself and mask the background. Then, I embedded the picture of the beach into the background and used different hues and photo filters to make the images blend together the way I wanted them to. After that, I inserted my 3 photos using the frame tool and upped the stroke on the frame to 4. Then, I added the text in smaller frames around the pictures and rotated them. Finally I added my name at the top and added the heading underneath. I am very comfortable with photoshop so I did not run into any issues while creating this project.

For revisions, I decided to improve my project by adding drop shadows behind all text on the magazine cover because one of the comments I received on my draft was that drop shadows would help the overall composition of my project. I also chose to up the stroke on the frame around the pictures to 10 pt in order to make it more visible. Next, instead of having the text boxes be pink and light blue, I made all of the boxes pink and all of the text in the boxes light blue. Along with the color of the text changing, I also warped the text into a flag pattern in the text boxes. Lastly, I changed the font from an Arial style font to a more Vogue inspired font in order to really bring in the idea of it being the cover to a fashion magazine.

All of the elements and pictures I used in my project I collected myself on my phone. The only picture I did not take myself is the one of me and my friend Meredith, the photographer, gave me permission to use this picture!

Image Collection

For my graphic design project I would like to do a magazine cover that tells readers what my blog is about and what my everyday life consists of.

My Fashion Journey

The topic I have decided to write about is fashion. Specifically, my life as a Fashion Merchandising student and the outfits I style for myself and my friends! I have chosen this topic because so much of my life is immersed in the fashion world whether it’s seeing an Instagram post about a clothing boutique, having a conversation with a professor, or deciding what to wear in the morning, fashion is always all around me.

To collect video footage I could walk go to class in the AMDT (Apparel, Merchandising, Design, and Textiles) building and record some of what we do in my classes throughout the day. In order to get original photos I could take pictures of outfits that I have styled for myself or my friends. So I can get original audio recordings I will interview fellow Fashion Merchandising students or Fashion Design students about their experiences and what designers and trends they are interested in lately.

In unit 1 I could make a poster for the AMDT department. During unit 2 I could make a fashionable logo to put on my business cards. For unit 3 I want to take inspiration from Glamour Magazine’s What I Wore When podcast and tell a story about an outfit that I wore on a specific occasion that had an impact on me. While in unit 4, I want to videotape what I wear in a week and the way that I style myself.

One of my biggest inspirations is Danielle Bernstein, the creator and mind behind We Wore What. We Wore What is by far my favorite blog and I always gravitate there when I need inspiration. Katie Sturino’s Instagram is another place that gives me inspiration; I love how she recreates celebrity outfits from her closet! Similarly, Danie Sierra inspires me to step out of my comfort zone with what I wear and express myself.  https://www.instagram.com/danie.sierra/
