Reflection Blog Post

Throughout this semester, my number one favorite project I created during this semester would have to be the Graphic Design Project because it allowed me to showcase my skills in Adobe Photoshop and taught me some new skills as well. The skills it taught me included drop shadowing and learning how to warp text into different patterns.

Within this class, I have learned so many skills and strengthened my existing skills in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere, and Audition. I had previously worked in all of these programs when entering into this course, but it had just vague experience in most of them. Because of this course, I can say that I am confident working and creating within these programs. Every skill that I have learned from this course is applicable within my chosen career field of fashion merchandising.

Since I want to work in e-Commerce merchandising, graphic design and Adobe Creative Cloud will be a large part of my career, making this an enjoyable and extremely resourceful, helpful class for me to take. The most influential projects I completed during this class upon my chosen career path would be the Video Story and the Logo Project. The logo project is extremely applicable as I am making logos for my Apparel Merchandising courses constantly and this project really strengthened my abilities within selecting and masking and organization on Illustrator. The video story is important to my career path because styling and outfit presentation is really important to the fashion industry.

I was very satisfied with the coursework within this class and thought that it all matched the course objective of developing and communicating ideas clearly through digital media.

Soundcloud was really useful when I was trying to find ambient background music for my audio story and video story, I love the way they added a filter button so you can filter out non-creative commons licensed content.

Final Video Story

Idea and Inspiration

For this project I decided to create an informational styling video. This project relates to my course topic since my course topic is fashion and my life here at WSU and this video shows how I would style outfits for a typical week here!

Design Process

I mainly researched through youtube; the lookbook videos I used to watch in 2015 inspired this type of video. I wanted to show videos of me wearing the outfits as well as them laid out the way they would be for a promotional advertisement to give variety and contrast between shots. I first started by brainstorming different events in pullman I could create looks for. I ended up settling on an outfit for class, an outfit for a night out, an outfit for Gameday, and an outfit for a date night or dinner. After that I thought about different outfits I have styled for events like these in the past and skimmed through my closet before settling on the outfits I chose.

Technical Detail

While filming I wanted to make sure that I had a dark background for half of the shots and a light background for the other half to give contrast. When filming each outfit on the flat surface on a dark background, I used flash and made sure to use the rule of thirds and get a bunch of different angles. When shooting the looks on, I used my bathroom because it is super bright and had a good place for me to set my phone while I filmed. I kind of just moved around in front of the camera a little bit and tried to get different angles of the outfits. After filming all of my shots, I sent them all to my computer renamed them accordingly and saved them in a folder. For the voice recordings, I wrote a script on my computer and then recorded myself reading it. I sent these recordings to my computer and also saved them in that folder. In Adobe, I first added all of my audio in to see how long it would be and then after that was put in, I used the mark in and mark out tools to crop the first clip to the size I wanted and then inserted it into the sequence. I then repeated this step for the next 19 clips. For the title I wanted to make it a light pink color and also create a more interesting font so I decided to skew the text on the x axis 55%. After that I checked the proportions of all of the clips and fit them all to the screen using the scale effect tool. Then, I went to the Lumetri Color tab and added the Fuji ETERNA 250d Kodak look on all of the clips. I had trouble with Premiere glitching and my audio not coming through correctly. I ended up just editing my audio in audition and then putting it into premiere after.

Audio Story

Idea and Inspiration

I decided to create an audio story about different outfits my friends have worn and the way these outfits made them feel. This project relates to my course topic, fashion, because styling and apparel production are two main components of the fashion industry.

Design Process

I settled on this idea after researching some different fashion podcasts and fell in love with Glamour’s What I Wore When podcast. They interview different celebrities and have them describe an outfit they wore on a significant day in their lives. I thought this was such a great idea that I knew immediately that is what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to do three smaller interviews as opposed to one longer interview from the beginning because I felt that one longer interview would not be as much information. My design process began by me writing down some of my ideas and recruiting my friends to be interviewed. Then I discussed with them what outfit they would pick and what questions I would be asking them. I think every element of my design is essential for the audio story to make sense, so all of them are very significant.

Technical Detail

I collected the different audio clips by recording them on my phone and then sending them to my computer. Once I had all of the clips downloaded on my computer, I uploaded them into Adobe Audition. Then, I used the razor selected clips tool to cut off any unnecessary pauses or silent spots in the recordings. I next put them in order of the way I wanted them to be listened to using the move tool. Lastly, I exported the entire multitrack mixdown session as an mp3 and uploaded it to Soundcloud. I did not encounter any technical issues with the Adobe Audition since I was already familiar with it.

Raw Audio Footage

I plan to tell a story of my friends and the types of outfits they wear through audio; it’s an interesting way to discuss fashion, but I think it really helps to portray the speakers emotions about their style.

Final Logo Project

Idea and Inspiration

For this project I wanted to create a logo for my blog. I wanted this logo to represent what my blog is about and also be simple, yet unique. The way I decided to do this is by having my logo be a dress form. Dress forms are used in every part of the fashion world from design studios to retail stores and everything in between, so I thought it would be a good way to make my topic obvious to viewers.

Design Process

I didn’t really do any research to help develop my idea because I pretty much knew what I wanted to do from the get-go. The significance of the capital letter Q in the center of the dress form represents the first letter of my first name. The dress form itself is significant to me because in my first retail job that really developed my interest in the fashion world, I would work with them everyday either dressing them or setting up displays. My design process consisted mostly of looking and hundreds of different dress forms to find one that had the shape I wanted. It also included picking out the font I wanted to use.

Technical Detail

I found the image I used as a reference when tracing the dress form on Google Images after I typed in dress form and scrolled for about 5 minutes. I traced the image in illustrator with the pen tool on the right side. Then I copied and pasted the right side and used the reflect tool to make the two sides be able to match up. I then joined these two paths together to create one shape. After that, I changed the fill to a light pink color and the stroke to none. I then went and looked at the fonts for a while and tried out a bunch of different ones before settling on Source Code Variable.

The main feedback that I got consisted of comments about how I needed more contrast in my design between the light pink and the white, so I decided to change the white to a dark plum color. Another comment I got was that since there was no stroke for the outline of my logo, it appeared jagged and looked rough, so I added a 2 pt dark plum outline. Another revision I made was I lengthened the “Q” in my logo in order to center it more. Finally, I selected both the text and shape and rasterized them.
